UthandoSA and Heart of Cape Town and have partnered with the Kind Heart Bench Project, an innovative social initiative aimed at creating awareness around mental health.
Uthando (Love) South Africa is an organisation dedicated to supporting grassroots community initiatives across Cape Town. By collaborating with the Kind Heart Bench Project, Uthando is expanding its platform to raise awareness and foster community connection.
The project began as a response to the impact of bullying, peer pressure and mental health struggles, especially affecting young people and is dedicated to creating safe inclusive spaces, focussed on mental health awareness.
By installing bright yellow benches with a supportive back and arm rests, they symbolise a commitment to creating supportive spaces for those facing mental health challenges.
The benches are a striking visual tool, reminding people to pause, breathe and to engage with others. By placing benches in visible locations within schools, churches, train stations, and even airports, the project encourages people of all ages to find a moment of connection, whether through peer support, open conversation, or simply taking a moment to relax. These spaces offer much needed help and support, encouraging kindness, empathy and connection.
With over 17 bench installations at various locations within the Cape Peninsula, the Kind Heart Bench Project has already reached thousands, promoting early intervention and peer support for mental well-being. The benches remind everyone to recognise their worth, share their struggles and to support one another.
With additional funding, the aim is to introduce the installation of Wi-Fi-enabled benches in public spaces, ensuring individuals have access to mental health resources wherever they may be.
