Heritage Day marked the culmination of the Heart of Cape Town’s Beautify Your Bin initiative, as part of a broader 67 Days for Mandela campaign.
Harfield Village residents transformed household refuse bins into colourful works of heart- focussed art symbolising love, joy and peace.
The bins were placed on the pavement outside as a display of solidarity in support of the NCHERS Remembrance Walk, which took place in the village on Heritage Day, honouring former residents dispossessed of homes in the area.
The Beautify your Bin initiative has spread into other communities too, notably Hanover Park and surrounds, where the decorated bins are being used to spread the message of Love, Peace and Unity – the core values of The Heart of Cape Town – whilst bringing colour to usually drab surroundings.
We encourage communities everywhere to continue decorating their bins with hearts and spreading the message it carries. 💙💚
A poem by Roberto Stemmet of YISS
I’m Mr Wheely,
At your convenience 24/7, I’m always there to take all your crap.
Without a word of dispair, I’m standing there, quietly in service to you, making sure that your dirt remains subdued,
Its a humble task to open me up to your loads of crap, and never to complain but to keep it under wraps,
Well that’s my job to keep you clean and to ensure that your health remains supreme.
I guess that’s enough to give me a purpose, now I understand the essence of my service.
But now that you’ve made me look so fine, I really feel loved, it’s so divine,
So now when they see me parking outside, I can stand out proudly with no reason to hide,
I’ve all of a sudden found my place, and that’s to spread love to the human race.
From me, Mr Weely to all of you, remain humble and soak up the crap, radiate love because it’s an essential service that many humans lack,
I’m Mr Wheely, I have your back
