Congratulations to the Heart of Cape Town and Uthando South Africa Lovenaire Family and Community Partners🙌🏻👏🏻 We did it together! 💙💚
Amidst tough competition, Uthando South Africa was presented with a 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 for PEACE, UNDERSTANDING AND INCLUSIVITY for its Heart of Cape Town campaign in the WTM Africa RESPONSIBLE TOURISM AWARDS 2025 ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) yesterday evening.
The judges were impressed and heartened by Uthando’s success in creating a movement centred on love, peace and unity, of the key reasons for its success was the support garnered from support from tourism industry leaders, city stakeholders and community groups. James Fernie has demonstrated through Uthando how tourism can be a force for good in the world, as he says: “It’s about giving with love. Creating hope and faith. Hope for a better future, faith in humanity.”
Uthando’s Heart of Cape Town Initiative began in November 2023 with simple illuminated, wire-crafted hearts created by local artisans promoted at trade shows - symbolising peace, love, compassion and kindness, which sparked a movement. The movement has grown to include Lovenaire, a new word coined to describe one: “who embodies the essence of compassion, harmony, and interconnectedness, inspiring others through their boundless capacity to love.” A giant heart sculpture and mini-heart pods are planned for the V&A Waterfront.
Congratulations, too, to all the other award winners who inspired with their incredible initiatives.
A most fitting and beautiful way to pay tribute to and to honour the recent passing of our friend and colleague, Cheryl Harper.

The entire Heart of Cape Town and Uthando South Africa community are deeply saddened by the passing of Cheryl Harper.
Cheryl was a one-of-a-kind, dynamic, and truly exceptional human being who dedicated her life to uplifting people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
She began her journey as an apartheid activist alongside Fatima Meer at the University of Natal, and from there, continued to fight for Peace, Love, and Unity in our country. Her organization, We Can Change Our World, has done so much to support communities across South Africa.
We have all been truly blessed to call Cheryl our friend. And what a wonderful friend she has been to us all.
Cheryl set the example for what it means to be a Lovenaire, and we will carry her legacy forward with pride, love, and purpose.
We love you, Cheryl Harper.

Continuing our series of honouring people who truly demonstrate what it means to be a #Lovenaire, we salute Wangarĩ Maathai, a Kenyan social, environmental and political activist who founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on planting trees, environmental conservation and women's rights.
Wangari dedicated her life to conservation and her love for the environment. In 2004 she became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

We all feel what other people are going through whether we are conscious of it or not.
At a deep level we are all affected by the horrifying and unimaginable tragedy of war, violence and division.
At a distance it appears there is not much that each of us can do, but in truth each and everyone of us can act as a “Lighthouse of Love, Kindness and Peace”.
This state of being comes from our HEARTS. We are all one. We are all Brothers and Sisters.
With all of our differences, arguments, disagreements and battles we have forgotten that we are all one life together.

The Heart of Cape Town, an initiative led by Uthando (Love) South Africa, passionately champions a profound message of Peace, Kindness and Love worldwide, whilst illuminating the truly inspiring and innovative work of South African community development projects and activists.
