In a celebration of kindness, sustainability and social upliftment, Uthando South Africa, in partnership with Heart of Cape Town, Goal50, We Are Africa, GCU Academy and the Kind Heart Bench Project, unveiled a Kind Heart Bench at Goal50 ECD Centre in Heideveld at on Friday 25 July, 2025.

The bright yellow bench, generously sponsored by We Are Africa, forms part of the larger Kind Heart Bench Project – a nationwide initiative to promote mental wellness, community support and open dialogue through the placement of thoughtfully designed public benches in meaningful spaces. These benches are intended to be more than seating; they are symbols of hope, compassion and connection.
Set against the backdrop of socio-economic challenges in Heideveld, the Goal50 ECD Centre is a ground-breaking model in education and eco-conscious design. When completed, this 750m²Montessori-inspired early childhood development hub will serve up to 100 children and is built using 5,000 repurposed rammed-earth tyres, eco-bricks, natural cob and earth-friendly plasters. The facility will include four bright and airy classrooms, outdoor astro-turfed play zones, and on-site accommodation for the principal.

This build goes beyond infrastructure – it empowers the community by employing and upskilling local residents during the construction process. As Peter McIntosh of The Natural Building Collective explains, “By creating a stimulating and sustainable learning environment, we are giving children a chance to thrive.”
The Kind Heart Bench Project, founded by artist and mental wellness advocate Bradley Bailey, is a growing movement using art and public space to advocate for mental health, emotional support and openhearted engagement. Installed at schools, parks, churches and commercial spaces across the country, each bench offers a safe, stigma-free zone where people of all ages can sit, reflect, connect and – when needed – reach out for professional support through QR code-accessed mental health services.
“The Kind Heart Bench is a beautiful example of what happens when organisations unite with a common purpose – to uplift, heal and connect,” says James Fernie, Founder of Uthando SA. The installation of the Kind Heart Bench at the Goal50 Centre seamlessly connects two powerful messages: the importance of sustainable development and the urgent need for emotional and mental wellness support in communities.

This unveiling is not just about celebrating a bench or a building – it’s about affirming a collective commitment to creating safe, inspiring spaces for children and adults alike. Through this partnership, Uthando SA, We Are Africa, and their collaborators, are showcasing a new kind of legacy – one built on compassion, sustainability and social justice.
